Bundesliga expert Kristian Sommer believes that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could look to his homeland once again this summer after securing the signature of Joel Matip.
The Reds announced yesterday that the Cameroon international will officially move to Anfield this off-season after settling a pre-contract agreement ahead of the expiration of his deal at Schalke.
With Klopp having been a huge success in the Bundesliga while in charge of Dortmund, there have been a vast array of links with players based in his homeland since his arrival in England.
And Sky Germany journalist Sommer told the Liverpool Echo that he can see the 48-year-old returning to his old stomping ground once again when the transfer window opens, with Granit Xhaka, Leroy Sane and even Mario Gotze potentially interesting names for him.
When asked about the possibility of more Bundesliga players moving to Liverpool, he said: “Definitely, because it is the league he [Klopp] knows inside out.
“Matip’s team-mate at Schalke Leroy Sane is currently being chased by many Premier League clubs.
“Also Granit Xhaka from Monchengladbach could be a possible target for the position in defensive midfield and it could be quite interesting to see what happens with one of Klopp’s former favourites, Mario Götze in the summer. However Liverpool would not only have to pay a lot of money but reach the Champions League. Who knows?”
Xhaka appears to be the most intriguing link of the three, with Klopp having reportedly met the Swiss midfielder’s agent to discuss a move.
Bayern Munich’s Gotze worked under the Anfield tactician while at Dortmund and Sane is thought to be a target for the Merseysiders, even though their relationship with Schalke may be somewhat strained following the Matip deal.
