Julian Nagelsmann has warned Timo Werner off making a move from RB Leipzig to Liverpool, as per Sport Bild (via The Liverpool Echo).
What did he say?
The 23-year-old Germany international has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield over the past few weeks and months and following his team’s Champions League victory over Tottenham on Wednesday he failed to deny those rumours.
No clues: Can you name the season these iconic Liverpool images belong to?
Now, the 32-year-old manager has spoken about the speculation, and says he has spoken to the former Stuttgart man. Nagelsmann explained: “It would be more difficult for Timo Werner to play at Liverpool than at Leipzig.
“He will not get the status he has here in the first few years and I tell him that too. The boys are seeing how we are developing and how much potential we have. We don’t leave anyone, who helps us, defenceless.”
Better level
You can understand Nagelsmann’s point. At Leipzig, Werner is undoubtedly the top dog, and is his manager’s first-choice striker. Rightly so, as well – he already has 26 goals in all competitions this season with around three months of the campaign left.
However, a move to Liverpool would be a huge step up. The Reds play in the Premier League, after all, which is arguably the best league in the world, and he would be pulling on the shirt of a side who won the Champions League last season.
Leipzig are having a fantastic campaign in the Bundesliga – they are just one point behind Bayern Munich at the top of the table – but this is the first time they have made the knockout stages of Europe’s premier club competition, for example. They are not used to a place at the continent’s highest table.

Yes, Werner would have to fight for a starting spot at Anfield – and even at his very best, he may struggle to displace Roberto Firmino in the short-term – but if he wants to test himself at the highest level, then he must depart Die Rotenbullen.
Whether Liverpool is the eventual destination remains to be seen.
